His works are highly sensory. While his artistic style falls within the Pop Art movement, there is a unique quality to his work that sets him apart from other Pop Art artists who embrace a more mainstream appeal. It seems that he had an extraordinary ability to perceive and respond to external stimuli in a way that felt almost intuitive.
Why is this artwork so captivating? The setting of the piece is an ordinary garden and house of an upper-middle-class American home with a pool. The artist simplifies the entire scene, flattening the structure and colors while removing depth from the background. The composition features a perfectly still, two-dimensional swimming pool surface, which evokes a sense of silence—or rather, tranquility. Suddenly, a disruptive element—the three-dimensional figure of a diving man—shatters this serene stillness. The splash created by his dive breaks the perfection of the quiet scene, generating a strangely satisfying effect for the viewer.
The sensation of speed conveyed by the dive, combined with the imagined sound of a "splash," enhances this feeling of exhilaration.
By focusing on a single splash, the artist captures a moment that combines spatial disruption, sound, and movement. Through their unique interpretation and reconstruction of this scene, they aim to offer the viewer a new experience. However, this remains a personal analysis, and it is uncertain whether the artist consciously considered these elements when creating the work.
The artwork below is a reconstruction of the mentioned elements. At the front of the piece, a diving board is installed, and a small pulley system suspends an acrylic cylinder filled with water in front of a large acrylic panel painted with spray paint. When the switch is activated, a miniature model falls, creating a splash effect.
Hockney의 The splash에 대한 개인적 해석
그의 작품들은 아주 감각적이다. 작품의 조류로는 팝아트 계열이지만 다른 팝아트 작가들의 대중적 성향과 완전히 융화되지 않은 그 만의 독특함 같은 것이 있다. 그는 인간이 외부적인 자극을 어떻게 느끼고 반응하는가를 천재적으로 터득하고 있었던 것 같다.
과연 이 작품이 왜 좋을까? 작품의 배경은 평범하기 짝이 없는 미국 중상류층의 Pool이 있는 정원과 집이다. 전체를 단순화 시켜 구조나 색채를 평면화하고, 기본 풍경에 적막, 아니 고요라 해야 옳을지 하여간 시각 및 청각적으로 완전한 평면인 수영장의 수면과 입체감을 없앤 2 차원적 배경을 마치 화면 바깥에서 뛰어 들어오는 듯한 자극, 3차원적 요소 (다이빙한 남자)가 그 완벽한 고요를 깨면서 생성한 Splash가 보는 이로 하여금 묘한 쾌감을 일으킨다.
다이빙에 의해 느껴지는 속도감과 ‘텀벙’ 할 것 같은 청각적 효과는 이런 쾌감을 더해준다.
Splash 하나로 평면의 균열에서 오는 공간감, 소리, 속도감을 합한 순간을 내 방식대로 해석, 재현해 보면서 보는 이로 하여금 새로운 경험을 가능하게 하고자 했다.
어디까지나 개인적인 해석이고 그가 작업할 때 이런 요소들을 고려하면서 작품을 제작했는지는 알 수 없다.
아래 작품은 앞에서 언급한 요소들을 재구성해 만든 작품이고, 작품 맨 앞에는 다이빙 대를 설치, 작은 도르래를 설치한 물이 담긴 아크릴 실린더 박스를 스프레이 페인트 작업을 한 대형 아크릴 앞에 위치 시켰다.
스위치를 통해 축소판이 떨어질 때는 splash가 만들어진다.
